Sunday Services and Sermons
Worship at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd
is much like a folk dance: it has certain steps
and turns but is meant to keep one's spirit
moving before God!
Presbyterian services of worship are centered
around the hearing and proclamation of God's
Word. Everything else is either in preparation
or in response to that Word.
Gathering Around the Word
The Christ Candle - Brought in during
the Prelude, symbolizing that Christ, the Light
of the World, has followed us from our lives
into worship and stays with us.
Introit - Music by which we move, in
meditation and prayer, from our hectic every-day
lives into the life in God's presence.
Call to Worship - a responsive reading
from Scripture where the voice of the people
slowly become one before the Lord.
Hymn of Adoration - with voices now
unified, we give God the praise due His Name.
Prayer of Confession/Assurance of Pardon
- In God's presence, we become aware of the
barriers between us and God and between each
other. We take responsibility for the breakdown
of relationship, first silently as individuals
then corporately as a group, in the good hope
that Jesus longs to heal and restore penitent
hearts to full life. We remember the hope of
our salvation in the assurance from Scripture
of God's love.
Proclamation of the Word
Time for Children - Jesus says the kingdom
belongs to one who are like children. Young
people come forward to received the news of
God's love for them.
Second Hymn - Prayerful song in preparation
for hearing God's Word.
Scripture and Sermon - The reading,
hearing and exposition on God's Holy Word for
instruction and encouragement for the life of
faith. Here the Holy Spirit works through the
words from the Bible, the illumination from
the sermon and in the hearts of listeners to
bring renewed faith and a call to service.
Baptism/Communion - Visible enactments
of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, where we experience
first-hand the grace of God.
Responding to the Word
Prayer of the People - Responding to
God's Word, the prayer is a time to give thanks
for God's goodness and to lift individuals,
groups, nations and the world to God's care
and direction. This concludes with the Lord's
Prayer.
Offering - Another faithful response
to God's Word is dedicating our time and money
to the service of the Church.
Hymn of Sending - A song that joins
our voices together, symbolizing our mission
that join us together as one: to love and serve
Christ in the world and to make Him known.
Benediction/Christ Candle - Literally
means, "A good word". The charge given
to God's people to love and serve God and the
world. The Christ Candle exits the sanctuary,
leading God's people out into the mission field.
The Postlude - Music that sends us out
to serve.
